Is AMD relevant again?
For the last couple years - the public perception that Nvidia’s lead was just too large to overcome, and AMD would be mainly left in the dust.
Oh how quickly the tide can change.
After being one product cycle behind for the last several years, a new major deal put AMD right back in the spotlight.

Why now? 👉 OpenAI’s Mega-Deal Fuels AMD’s Comeback
Last week, AMD vaulted back into the tech spotlight thanks to a blockbuster partnership with OpenAI. The ChatGPT creator announced a multi-year agreement to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD’s AI chips in its infrastructure in a deal reportedly worth tens of billions of dollars in future revenue for AMD. News of this game-changing order sent AMD’s stock surging over 25% in a single day as investors cheered the chipmaker’s entry into OpenAI’s supply chain. This strategic win marks a potential turning point for AMD’s AI ambitions, as the company has trailed far behind Nvidia in the race for high-end artificial intelligence hardware. OpenAI’s commitment to use AMD’s forthcoming Instinct accelerators (starting with the MI450 GPUs in 2026) is seen as a strong validation of AMD’s technology and a bid to diversify the AI compute ecosystem beyond Nvidia.
The OpenAI deal also grants the AI startup warrants to acquire up to 10% of AMD’s shares as certain deployment milestones are met, aligning both companies’ incentives for success. This deep collaboration suggests OpenAI is betting on AMD as a long-term partner, not just a second-source supplier. It comes on the heels of OpenAI’s massive procurement commitments with Nvidia, underscoring the insatiable demand for AI chips and the need for multiple vendors. For AMD, which just a year ago was barely a footnote in the AI datacenter market, landing OpenAI’s business is a huge credibility boost. It signals to other hyperscalers and software firms that AMD’s GPUs are becoming viable alternatives as shortages and high costs of Nvidia hardware persist.
